Boat of Garten
Boat of Garten is a peaceful village on the banks of the river Spey, surrounded by fields and Caledonian Pine Forests in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Located at the end of a quiet residential street, Loch Cottage is within an easy 5 minute walk of an extremely good local shop, newsagent and post office, a hotel and bar, the renowned and popular Anderson’s restaurant and Ride Cairngorm cycle and hire shop and cafe. There is also an art gallery and photographic studio.
Milton Loch, just 100m away, also has a marked nature walk, a heronry and a hide where you can watch the fantastic wildlife and the birds that nest there every year. Last year funding was allocated to build an Osprey nesting platform by the loch, so hopefully it will become home to a nesting pair with Ospreys being seen regularly over the cottage
The River Spey is also just a 5 minute walk away, with a beautiful path along the river bank.
Abundant wildlife, magnificent scenery, many sporting and leisure activities and a traditional Highland welcome await visitors to this lovely village with activities ranging from playing golf at the James Braid designed 18-hole golf course within walking distance, fishing the Spey, cycling or walking on excellent tracks and quiet roads or travelling on the Strathspey Steam Railway which stops at Boat of Garten station.
Just 3 kilometers from Boat of Garten is the Abernethy Forest RSPB Reserve on the shore of Loch Garten. Between April and August visitors can see the famous ospreys at their nest, hopefully with some chicks. In Spring, if you are very lucky, there’s a chance of spotting the elusive Capercaillie, especially in the early morning hours. Very recently Milton Loch, which can be seen from the cottage, has been awarded funding to build its very own Osprey nesting tower so it is possible that sightings of this wonderful bird will be likely from the garden of Loch Cottage.
